                     Welcome to Karystos!

Sunset

Karystos is a town built in the safety of a picturesque bay and embraced by the magnificent range of Ochi, the mountain of legends and strong winds. A town crowned by orchards with sweet scented lemon trees, roses and other flowers. Surrounded by wonderful sandy beaches, big and smaller, cool villages but also breathtaking rough and steep slopes. A place with tasty, fresh fish and the renowned delicious goat and lamp dishes served in the tavernas by the seaside or the near villages. Karystos is also known for its unique urban planning designed by a Bavarian civil engineer who carried out the personal wish of the first king of modern Greece, Otto.

Yet, Karystos hides many more treasures that remain to be discovered and enjoyed by the visitors. A place so near Athens, but also so little known. A place which, due to its proximity to Athens, offers  the option of a short, or long break away and relaxation. Karystos is not exactly an island, yet it gives the absolute impression of an island with its numerous fishing boats, small, bright coloured row boats, fishing nets laid to dry, octopus hanging in the sun, fishermen lazily drinking coffee or ouzo in the coffee shops. The short ferry trip from Raffina (1 hour) only intensifies the feeling of being on an island.

Karystos is part of a big island, Euboea (the second in size after Crete) and anyone who wishes for some adventure, may follow the road from Chalkis (capital of Euboia) driving southward to the very end of the road where our town is, a drive lasting 2,5 to 3 hours. The islands closer to Karystos are Andros and Kea (or Tzia), followed by Tinos, Syros, Kythnos etc. The bay of Karystos provides shelter to ships, large and small, during the strong gusts of the frequent, strong winds which characterize the region.

Karystos is a blessed place since, contrary to other provincial areas, it offers a number of job opportunities for locals, young and older. Fishing, agriculture and the extraction of the famous karystian marble are some of them. Modern and smart cafeterias, bars and internet cafés offer amusement and companionship to young people.

It is true! Karystos provides everything to everyone. Jobs to the locals, amusement to the visitors, wonderful country sites for nature lovers and hikers, superb beaches for sea lovers and swimmers, historic monuments for history lovers, excellent food and desserts for hungry one; all of the above, in less than two hours from the centre of Athens.

Karystos is waving to all of you; inviting you. Respond to the invitation soon.
